What To Consider When Changing Home Security Providers

Published in Blog

There are so many options when considering home security companies, solutions, technologies that picking one company can be confusing at best. What may start off as a positive relationship can sour over time due to a wide range of reasons. Some companies may go out of business or they may not be providing you with the latest security technologies available. You may be unhappy with their level of customer service or their technicians may be careless or under-trained (we see many examples of careless holes drilled in walls or exterior siding which reflect lazy attention to best practices).

With over 50 years of experience in providing certified, licensed, and insured home security to Vermont and New Hampshire, we have seen customers change to Tasco Security for hundreds of different reasons but none more important than the fact that we provide exceptional, local customer service. Whatever the reason may be, changing home security providers is an easier task than you may think, as long as you make sure of a few things.Tasco_1.jpeg

  • Review Your Current Contract

It is industry standard to sign a contract with your home security provider, however, how that contract is laid out varies greatly depending on the company. Some may charge an early termination fee while others may retain ownership of the systems they install. Do they require a 30-day notice? We always suggest putting your cancellation in writing (either by mail or email) to make sure you have proof of cancellation. Finally, make sure to read the fine print or contact your current provider to understand what any “penalties” may involve.
  • Ask About Your Hardware

Some security companies require you to purchase your security equipment while others may lease a system for a monthly rate. Some providers utilize security hardware that cannot be used by another home security company. If you own your home security system you will need to discuss this with your new provider to understand if the hardware is compatible and/or if your technology is up to date. If your previous system was professionally installed, and it needs to be removed, you possibly may have to pay a technician to remove it. Some residential security companies, like Tasco Security, are able to take outdated security systems and upgrade them to today's technology. Whatever the case you need to understand what exactly happens to your hardware and how compatible it is with your new provider.

  • Evaluate Costs (Pros vs. Cons)

When changing to a new security provider there are a few different costs to consider such as early cancelation fees, installation/activation costs from your new provider, new hardware costs, and potential increased monthly fees. Although there may be some increased costs, this potentially could be worth it to upgrade outdated technology and/or move to a company with professionally trained staff and more responsive customer service. Some companies may have promotions or discounts for changing (or staying) that you should ask about. Writing a list of pros and cons can help you better understand if moving to a new company is your best option.
