Modern Security Systems and Their Online Presence

With the constant updates and upgrades to security systems, many are offering an opportunity to integrate with online access, allowing the user to constantly be in the know about what is truly important to them, and no I am not referring to their relationship status.

Being able to pop open an application on your telephone and monitor your home's security system, complete with thermostat and light settings, is a truly remarkable advancement in the world of technology and security alike. We as consumers can oftentimes become lazy when it comes to our online access. We log into accounts and sometimes forget to properly log out, or we set the thermostat at a high temperature and forget to lessen it when we leave the house.

Security systems are becoming increasingly popular, and downright vital in certain situations, whether it be protecting your home, place of business, banking institution, or yes, your Facebook account. These are all places that hold a wide variety of personal and private information that you should treat with care. Utilizing the online presence of your security system will give you the freedom to again keep tabs on all things important in your life.

Meet Our Team: Danniel Day

As you know, Tasco Security is a locally owned and operated company. This means we could not possibly be the company we are without a great staff, so get ready to meet some of the talented folks on our team.

Say hello to Danniel Day, Tasco Security's Service Manager.

DDay Tasco TeamAs Service Manager, Dann is responsible for overseeing the team and making sure that we are providing the best possible service for our customers. How does he do this? “Through understanding, planning, education, and being proactive…I am looking at all aspects of our business operations,” said Dann.

Danniel has been a part of the security world for quite some time now. He began his career with the Vermont Department of Corrections where he was trained in all aspects of physical security, camera systems, and access systems. Eventually Dann ventured into security system installation, first with his own small business installing security cameras, and later on installing large commercial systems for a well known department store and other large scale commercial and residential clients.

Dann’s knowledge of home security does not stop there. He also has plenty of experience in personal security. He has also held management positions with firearms manufacturers Ruger and Taurus, handling company operations. He is a NRA certified handgun instructor and a licensed martial arts teacher.

No matter where his life has taken him, Dann has always been involved in some aspect of security. When it comes down to it, helping others is his real passion.

“I always enjoyed helping others and working with them to meet their security needs,” said Dann. “I really enjoyed working with camera systems in the past and wanted to focus my time and energy on security technologies and helping people protect themselves and their assets.”

He is finding himself right at home at Tasco Security and has already begun work to streamline some of our operations to make us even more efficient and better overall for our customer base.

When Danniel isn’t working hard to make Tasco Security even better, he enjoys being with his wife and four kids, traveling, practicing martial arts and shooting sports, bicycling, and even scuba diving.

Maintain a Safe Office

By taking a few precautions, you can ensure that your office is safe for you, your employees, and visitors. Taking a variety of factors into account is necessary, including both the physical and mental safety of workers and the hospitableness of the environment.

The CDC asserts the importance of office safety and provides a clear explanation of all the elements to be considered: "Maintaining a healthy office environment requires attention to chemical hazards, equipment and work station design, physical environment (temperature, humidity, light, noise, ventilation, and space), task design, psychological factors (personal interactions, work pace, job control) and sometimes, chemical or other environmental exposures."

Certain aspects of office safety mentioned in this safety manual are as simple as keeping your work and eating areas and restrooms clean. "Injuries in office settings often come about because the 'housekeeping' of the office has become slack...Cleanliness and good housekeeping can also reduce allergic reactions to dust/mold and prevent illness such as the flu or a virus."

If you have the luxury of planning out your office space or starting from scratch with office furniture and technology, try to purchase ergonomically designed equipment that will improve employee health and comfort. The CDC explains this further: "A well-designed office allows each employee to work comfortably without needing to over-reach, sit or stand too long, or use awkward postures (correct ergonomic design)."

Office conditions are not always ideal. If you find that employees are experiencing discomfort or a lack of productivity due to their workspaces, encourage them to take breaks from their desks or to rearrange their spaces to personally improve their work environment. "Studies have shown that those working at computers have less discomfort with short, hourly breaks."

Every office is different. Take stock of yours to see how things could be improved for the safety and health of your employees. Better conditions for workers can decrease workplace stress. According to the CDC, job stress increases: "when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities or resources of the worker."

Untreated stress can result in sickness so keeping a continuous watch on the mental and physical health of employees in conjunction with office safety will only improve conditions for everyone in your workplace.

Lights, Camera, Action! - The Latest in Security Camera Technology

Camera technology in the security industry has come a long way over the past few years and it continues to improve and advance. Protecting your home or business requires knowing what is going on the moment it happens and nothing works better for that than a camera system.

CCTV (closed circuit TV) systems provide peace of mind with real time monitoring, deterrence of unwanted events, and an audit trail of activity that can be used for management or prosecution if needed. The data collected can be stored for days, weeks, or even months. In addition, the data can be archived or downloaded for future use.

Activity can be conveniently monitored through a smart phone or web browser, allowing you to see in real time when a package is delivered, who entered the office during the night shift, if the driveway was plowed, or check in on the babysitter.

Studies show that people tend to behave when they know they are being watched, so the installation of a camera system can inherently provide deterrence of unwanted events.

Real time monitoring can be used to watch a property, an area of your business, a business process, or the activity of employees. Business camera systems can provide video evidence of crimes, increase employee productivity, reduce theft inside and outside of the business, and can supplement other security measures.

Residential camera systems are often used to monitor second homes, unattended service people, babysitters, elderly relatives, or children. The ability to monitor these situations remotely affords people the freedom to live their lives with the peace of mind that they are in control of what is happening when they can't be there.

Security cameras are only half of the video surveillance equation. To truly integrate security camera feeds into your system, Tasco Security offers numerous types of devices that give you flexible viewing and recording features.

At Tasco Security, we identify what your needs are and recommend the most appropriate camera surveillance system for your property. With our professional installation and service we can ensure that you have the best quality products that suit your needs.

Light Up the Night!

Have you ever been driving late at night and come across a deer? You wait for it to cross the road but it is shocked by the bright headlights, and stops dead in its tracks. Imagine if you could stop intruders the same way!iphone lighting

Well, you can.

When an intruder is looking for a home to get into, they are looking for the easiest ways in and out without being detected by the homeowners or neighbors. With the addition of motion sensory lighting to your security system, you can deter would-be intruders and keep your home safe.

At Tasco Security we believe in a comprehensive approach to security. Alarm systems are a great place to start, but there are many ways to customize your own security system to offer the optimal amount of security for your needs and budget. If you are looking for added security, we highly suggest motion-sensory lighting and we can help you choose the lighting, and electrician to install your lighting, that fits your needs.

Not only do motion-sense lights deter potential intruders, they also create a well-lit area without searching for the light switch.

Imagine you are coming home after dark. Maybe you are just getting home from work with a car full of groceries, etc., and you are fumbling for your house keys in the dark. Maybe you don’t even make it to the front door because someone left the garden hose out and you’ve tripped over it in the dark and now everything you were carrying is all over the walkway. Or perhaps you live out in the woods, as many of us do, and human intruders are less of a worry than unwanted woodland visitors.

No matter what the scenario is, motion-sense lights could greatly contribute to your security and overall safety.

Keeping Your Home Safe While You’re Away for Summer Vacation

summerSummer is here, and that means swimming pools, shorter clothes, and long vacations. Summer is the idea time for vacationing and visiting friends and relatives. On the other hand, being away from home also means homeowners must give up a sense of control, leaving the safety of their home largely in the hands of fate.

Locking all doors and windows is a great first step, however, the last thing a homeowner wants to experience when arriving back from a vacation is seeing that their home has been burglarized. Here are some tips for keeping a home safe during vacation:

Discontinue Paper Service. If a potential criminal sees a pile up of newspapers on a doorstep during a vacation, they’re more likely to think that the homeowners are away. This can promote a higher incidence of burglary. Homeowners are advised to discontinue their paper service while they are on vacation, or to have a neighbor, friend, or close relative to pick up the mail.

Keep a Car in the Driveway. Leaving a secure car in the driveway while on vacation may tip off burglars that someone is home, reducing the chances of a break in. Better yet, having a relative or friend house sit may also discourage unlawful entry while traveling.

Install a proper Security System. Having a security system that monitors suspicious movement, unauthorized entry, and burglary can keep valuables (and the home) safe and secure. A security system that allows homeowners to control outdoor lighting may also be helpful for discouraging nighttime intruders.

Refrain from posting whereabouts on social media. Posting that a family is going on vacation in a foreign land or location can travel quickly through the grapevine, especially if privacy controls on a social media platform are relaxed.

Keeping New Year's Eve Happy

The best way to keep your New Year's Eve a happy one is to ensure that you, your family, and friends are safe! Taking a few simple precautions, whether you are entertaining at home or facing the crowds in the city, will guarantee a more enjoyable holiday for everyone.

A major danger for those heading out on New Year's Eve is drunk driving. The roads are always busy and with the amount of celebrating going on, it is an extremely unfortunate guarantee that there will be intoxicated individuals behind the wheel. Protect yourself and others; don't be part of the problem. The first piece of advice in an Army article on safety for the holiday is: "Designate a Driver...don't drink and drive. If you have a friend who does not prefer to drink, make sure they take the wheel."

The piece goes on to say that if you can manage it, avoid driving entirely. "...Avoid a potentially dangerous accident by staying off the road. Otherwise, be alert and drive defensively." Wear a seatbelt and if it's possible, take advantage of public transportation, a cab, or stay at a friend's house.

Another helpful list of safety measures can be found here. If you are attending a crowded event or party, "be on guard and aware of your surroundings...travel with a group or in pairs...and make sure everyone has a 'buddy' who can confirm they got home safely at the end of the night." No matter where you are, don't leave your drink unattended.

The Army article reminds us to be safe at home as well. "Be careful with open flames: If you're burning candles, incense or oil burners, remember to extinguish them before you turn in or before you leave the room they are burning in. Pay extra attention to pets and children around open flames."

Finally, if you are holding an event at your home, be a responsible host. Serve alcohol in moderation and provide alternative beverages. Make sure guests have enough to eat and if possible, that they don't overindulge. Taking guests' keys at the beginning of the night will help avoid an awkward situation if they have had too much to drink. Help arrange safe rides home or insist that friends stay with you.

By being smart and conscientious, you can make sure that the holiday will be a successful and safe one for you, your family, and friends.

Keep Thanksgiving Safe

Thanksgiving is a treasured holiday that brings family and friends together to give thanks for all that they have in their lives as well as to enjoy some great food. But, did you know that Thanksgiving is also the one day of the year with the highest incidence of fires involving cooking equipment? It has been estimated that more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day alone!

Keep everyone, especially children safe by following some of these "common sense" tips:

  • Don't leave the kitchen while frying, grilling or cooking food on your stovetop, and never leave your home while the turkey is cooking.
  • Use a timer and do frequent checks when simmering, baking, broiling and roasting food.
  • If you are deep frying a turkey, keep the fryer outside away from walls, fences and other structures.
  • Also, keep the fryer away from moisture to avoid burns from steam and spattering oil.
  • Keep pot holders, food wrappers, and most importantly children, at least 3 feet away from the stove or other hot surfaces.
  • Make sure the handles of pots and pans on your stovetop are facing inward.
  • Avoid wearing loose clothing, especially with long sleeves, while cooking.
  • And make sure all candles and smoking materials are put out after the guests leave and never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure electric cords are not dangling off the counter within reach of children
  • Test your smoke alarms to make sure that they are in working order.

Follow these simple rules to make sure that the hottest thing you encounter this Thanksgiving is your turkey and stuffing! Remember that security is more than just guarding against external threats to your well-being. Have a Happy, and Safe, Thanksgiving!

Is Being Careful Online and Physical Security That Different?

Having a solid secure environment is vitally important to a person's well-being. Now that seems like an obvious statement, right? Unfortunately, many people do not understand, or appreciate, the true importance of being safe and secure in every aspect of their life.

All too often people believe that they do not need a security system because nothing will happen to them or their home. If only that was always the case, then that would be fantastic. Unfortunately in today's world, we all need to be cautious and constantly aware of our surroundings. So the question becomes, is being careful online really that different from being careful in "real life?"

In essence, they shouldn't be all that different, but in actuality they end up being worlds apart. More individuals value the security of their Facebook accounts more than that of their actual homes. They make sure to change their account passwords on a frequent basis, but never lock their doors when leaving for the day.

We all need to be careful when surfing the web, that should be obvious; but we all need to be a little more aware that physical security more often than not outweighs our online presence in more ways than one. No matter where you live, the physical security of your home is something that needs to be carefully considered. Why wait until something happens to finally think about the physical security of our home?
